Information is one of your most valuable assets

Electronic information is undoubtedly one of the most valuable assets within an organization and there is a growing range of communication channels such as email, web, IM, mobile and voice over IP over which this information can travel. This abundance of choice has led to the emergence of an increasingly sophisticated range of online threats such as viruses, spam, inappropriate content, spyware and phishing attacks. These threats present real business risks such as impact to business continuity, loss of confidential information, legal exposure and failure to enforce regulatory compliance, all of which can have significant financial implications.

A history of innovation

MessageLabs, now part of Symantec, was founded in 1999 with a single purpose – to find a better way to stop the new breed of viruses that were harnessing the power of Internet to spread rapidly and causing huge disruption to the business world. Traditional anti-virus software was designed in a pre-Internet age. Reactive in nature it was proving to be ineffective at stopping this new breed of viruses.

Every threat should be stopped long before it reaches you

MessageLabs was the first company in the world to introduce anti-virus as a service rather than software, delivered within the fabric of the Internet, that was able to stop threats long before they reached their intended targets, could learn from the huge volumes of messages being processed and was able to draw on far greater resources than would be possible within a single organization. The result was a truly revolutionary anti-virus service that gained worldwide recognition for stopping and naming the Lovebug virus hours before any other vendor heralding a new era in the industry.

A simple and compelling vision

MessageLabs has built on this successful model and extended our vision to provide complete certainty in the exchange of all business information, regardless of protocol, device or location. The company continues to innovate as messaging evolves – now with some 19 patents granted or pending.

Our Vision

It’s not just about email anymore

MessageLabs initial focus was on email, with our anti-virus, anti-spam and content filtering services, as it was widely deployed and increasingly exposed to risks and under attack. Today, the same levels of business adoption and associated risks are being seen across other applications such as the web and IM. MessageLabs has successfully evolved to address these new threats with the launch of our web and IM Security Services. Even more important is the integration across all of our services. At MessageLabs, this integration stretches far beyond mere packaging into a single service and support model, a single management portal and, most importantly, into deploying our SkepticTM technology from a single knowledge base across multiple communication channels.

Skeptic – it thinks therefore it is

Skeptic technology is at heart of our services and uses unique predictive technology to provide industry leading protection against emerging messaging and web threats before they get near the corporate network. In continuous development since 1998, Skeptic learns from every message it sees, updating and evolving ahead of every new threat, and constantly building on its already vast knowledge base.

In this way Skeptic is a self-perpetuating technology, its effectiveness increases with the volume and diversity of Internet traffic it sees, something that is increasingly important now that it is being deployed across email, web and IM. An industry first, MessageLabs has introduced ‘Converged Threat Analysis’, taking recent threat and reputation information from one protocol, such as email, and applying that knowledge to another protocol, such as web traffic, providing an unparalleled level of knowledge and protection for MessageLabs clients – that consistently sets new standards in the industry.
